Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw founded Biocon in 1978, beginning her biotechnology venture in a garage in India. Her preparation crossed disciplines: she studied zoology at Bangalore University and completed postgraduate training in malting and brewing in Australia in 1975. Fermentation science became part of the foundation of her entrepreneurial work.
Biocon developed into a biopharmaceutical business with an emphasis on research and access to medicines. Beyond the company, Mazumdar-Shaw helped establish the Association of Biotech-Led Enterprises in 2003, extending her involvement to an industry forum. Her career connects the technical work of developing a scientific business with the longer task of building institutions around an emerging sector.
