Tadashi Yanai joined the business now known as Fast Retailing in 1972. Its roots lay in Ogori Shoji, a menswear shop founded in Ube in 1949. Yanai became president and chief executive in September 1984, three months after the first UNIQLO store opened in Hiroshima.
The retailer subsequently developed across different store formats and markets. Its first roadside UNIQLO opened in 1985, and the company adopted the Fast Retailing name in 1991. A Tokyo office opened in 1996 to strengthen product planning and development. Online sales followed in 2000, and the first overseas UNIQLO opened in London in 2001. These milestones place Yanai’s leadership within the expansion of an established retail business.
