William Tanuwijaya is a co-founder of Tokopedia, the Indonesian commerce platform. His account of its purpose places small businesses at the centre: opening opportunities for local entrepreneurs while helping people access goods and services across the country.
That ambition informed Tokopedia’s combination with Gojek to form GoTo in May 2021. The companies had already worked together on commerce deliveries in 2015, using Gojek’s driver network. The later combination brought the marketplace alongside transport, food delivery and financial services. In the announcement, Tanuwijaya described wider economic participation as a continuing objective. His story offers a view of company building through the connections between merchants, customers and the services that support a transaction.
